Cottage Life: A beginner's baguette

There's something nice about a magazine. It means it's time to put your feet up, enjoy a cuppa, and scan the just-right-mixture of photo and text to whatever topic tickles your fancy. Just ask my mum, who has stacks of Hello and Good Food at home, and gets me subscriptions to Canadian Living, Style at Home, and Chatelaine. A more recent find is The Simple Things, which suddenly has you yearning to quit your day job and start a small holding or take up a new hobby like wild flower foraging.

Perhaps it was the draw to a slower way of living that this last magazine encourages, and the fact that I was at a cottage where I had a little extra time on my hands (thanks to the presence of extra helping hands), but I thought of trying something I had never done before - bread! - and a baguette at that.

The finished product, with its butter & jam side-kicks

Well, maybe I needed Paul Hollywood with me, but the final product wasn't as glamorous as its magazine counterpart (#nailedit). Luckily, it was still tasty and devoured by all the helping hands that were present.

For any of you interested in giving this wake-up bake a go, you can find the recipe here. As for me, I'll spend a bit more time with these two rather than the kitchen ;-)
