The Engagement
Five years ago today, Antoine asked a me a big question that caught me off guard.
You see, for Christmas he told me that he had booked us a weekend away in an EXP cabin in Mont-Tremblant provincial park. I was happy at the prospect of a weekend together, but secretly disappointed as I had had the feeling he was going to propose at Christmas (yes, yes, I admit I thought this...). Little did I know he already had a little plan up his sleeve...
Leading up to the weekend, I was planning and preparing meals thinking the breakfasts from the weekend would make a nice blog post, much like our stay in a rustic treehouse. Much like that weekend, we arrived late Friday so as to be able to maximize our time. We also like the idea of arriving somewhere new when it is dark so as to be surprised by our surroundings the next morning.
On the Saturday, I made us breakfast before heading out for a hike. At the first lookout, we asked a couple to take our photo.
It was a beautiful late winter day where you it felt like spring was just around the corner. As I was expressing this sentiment, Antoine turned around and started a little speech about how much he enjoys spending time with me. I was so taken aback by him talking like this, I sort of stared like a fool before I realized... he's proposing! It wasn't until he pulled out a little red box with a ring inside that I clicked.
Antoine had proposed using a decoy ring he got at a second hand shop on St. Laurent Blvd (we had been there in the past for items for our old apartment so there was a bit of significance!). The funny thing was that when I was hiking, my hands were swollen from the heat and the ring appeared to fit. However, later that evening when the swelling had gone down, I found out the hard way that the ring didn't fit as it flew into the garbage when I was cleaning up!
At the next lookout, we met up with the same couple who took our photo earlier and shared the good news with them. It was fun to have that moment with complete strangers.
The next day, we made crêpes and sausages for breakfast before driving home to share the good news with our relatives.
